Mist coating new plaster

Applying a mist coat before you paint your newly plastered walls is vital.

Essentially a mist coat consists of watered down matt emulsion paint which seals the new plaster allowing the paint to bond correctly. (Don't use vinyl paint)

Standard paint from the tin is too thick and will just sit on the surface, eventually cracking or peeling off.

Generally a ratio of 70% water to 30% matt emulsion is a good mix. It will appear quite watery and look quite patchy when you put it on. This is fine. Ideally you want to give it a mist coat then two coats of white emulsion before your final colour for a great finish.

Top Tips!

  • Give the paint a good stir before you start to make sure the water and paint mix.

  • Make sure you put down floor protection before you start. Watered down paint can be messy!

  • Mask round switches and sockets to protect them from paint.
